Dear Col. Aldrin, It is a great honor, sir, to wish you a very happy 90th birthday as well as good health and happiness in the future. As a "young man" of nearly 65, I grew up against the backdrop of Projects Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, and I keenly remember following the details of the Gemini 12 mission while still an elementary school student. In July 1969, of course, I was among the millions -- or rather billions -- who felt pride, exultation, and gratitude when you, Neil Armstrong, and Major General Collins completed your historic mission. Perhaps even more importantly, however, I have long admired your commitment to advocating for the continuation and expansion of America's manned space program. A renewed commitment to space exploration is essential to our identity as a nation, and I personally am grateful for your essential work during the last fifty years since your return from the Sea of Tranquility! As an instructor in history at two community colleges in Southern California (and as a former Army officer), I speak regularly about the significance of our manned space program, and I am always proud to discuss your exceptional achievements. My students see you as a true hero and a great public servant -- and, as well, as a heroic airman whose name ranks with those of Mitchell, Doolittle, Eaker, Twining, and Arnold in the history of the USAF. May God bless you as you continue to serve our nation. It would be an honor to have the opportunity to meet you one day.
